Deels in directe schildering, deels gezien met de ogen van de vertegenwoordiger van de tolerantie en gezond verstand, de raadsheer Daniel Drouin, ontvouwt zich de tragedie, waarvoor Johnson gebruik gemaakt heeft van uitgebreid beschikbaar bronnenmateriaal. De aantrekkelijke Grainier voelt weliswaar de roeping tot priester, maar wil zich daardoor niet tot opgave van zijn rechten als persoonlijkheid laten dwingen. Zijn faam als vrouwenverleidster wakkert jaloezie en afgunst aan. Als het ursulinenklooster door demonen wordt geteisterd, duikt telkens weer de naam Grainier op, door een fanatiek biechtvader en duivelbanner aan de monden van de hallucinerende nonnen ontlokt. Grainiers vijanden verzamelen belastend materiaal tegen hem; met tragische onvermijdelijkheid eindigt hij op de brandstapel.
