Pravdivý příběh otce a syna, kteří uskutečnili neuvěřitelnou 20 000 kilometrů dlouhou cestu kanoí z kanadského Winnipegu k ústí řeky Amazonky v Brazílii. Původně vyrazil autor se svými oběma syny ale jeden z nich se po doplutí do Mexického zálivu vzdal, neboť pokračování znamenalo jistou smrt. Byla to obyčejná šest a půl metru dlouhá kanoe. Jejich cesta vedla přes: řeku Red River, řekou Mississippy, podél břehu Texasu, Mexický záliv. Dále pokračuje jen Don a jeho syn trpící astmatem Dan podél Belize, Hondurasu, Nicaraguy, Kostariky, Panamy, Kolumbie, Venezuely, Trinidadu a říčními systémy Jižní Ameriky. Cesta je obrovským dobrodružstvím, kde se setkávají s neustálým nebezpečím: velryby, pirani, obrovské včely, uragány, záplavy a vichřice...
