Hij wilde het manuscript zelfs niet terugsturen naar zijn dochter, waardoor het tijdens haar leven nooit tot een publicatie kwam. Mary Shelley (1797-1851) werd geboren in Londen. Haar ouders waren twee van de meest radicale schrijvers uit die tijd: Willam Godwin, een anarchistische utopist, en de feministische Mary Wollstonecraft, die stierf door de geboorte van haar dochter Mary. Ze trouwde met de dichter Percy Bysshe Shelley. In 1818 debuteerde ze met het wereldberoemde verhaal Frankenstein , en in 1920 voltooide ze Mathilda , dat pas in 1959 postuum werd uitgegeven.
