This is a book about a girl growing up in the country. Alison Uttley has drawn on her own youth to produce memories so vivid and nostaligic that you can almost smell the honeysuckle and hear the owls calling at dusk. She writes about the small intense joys and sorrows of life on a small farm: the fun of haymaking, the sadness of favourite animals being slaughtered, and the close sweetness of Christmas celebrations in the farmhouse kitchen

Water-Rat decides that he will have a picnic so he invites his friends Grey Rabbit and Squirrel to join her. So they arrange all the goodies and set off in their rowing boat to find a nice picnic spot on the bank of the river. Hare sees them on their way and wants to join them but there is no room in the boat so they tell him to run along the bank and they will meet up. Unfortunately the threesome meet up with a family of troublesome ducks and this causes problems. But eventually they overcome most of them and settle down for their picnic. When they decide to go home Hare invites them to his house to have some tea and meet his housekeeper, Mrs Webster. They go along, have a jolly time again and then some good news arrives ...

Little Grey Rabbit is one of the classic gems of children's literature. The series is being relaunched, tying in with a new, beautifully animated television adaptation, and will delight children as much today as when it was first published seventy years ago. As a punishment for stealing food from Grey Rabbit's house, Squirrel tied a knot in Rat's tail. Now, he is reminded of his wickedness wherever he goes and can no longer poach or thieve or hunt as a rat must to survive! What can Rat do to free himself? Wise Owl advises him to turn over a new leaf -- to work honestly instead of thieving for a living. And so a penitent Rat goes about helping his neighbours where he can, and though surrounded by temptation, he feels his tail loosen and his heart grow lighter with every good, unselfish deed. Rat is reformed and respectable -- and a sought after carver.
