Gustav Adolf Warneck (1834-1910) war ein evangelischer Theologe. Er studierte in Halle Theologie und war mehrere Jahre lang als Pfarrer tätig. Warneck gilt als der Begründer einer protestantischen Missionswissenschaft als theologische Disziplin und wurde 1896 zum Professor für Missionswissenschaft in Halle ernannt. Ausschlaggebend für die Berufung war Warnecks organisatorische und publizistische Tätigkeit in der Mission. Er war auch Begründer der Allgemeinen Missionszeitschrift, des Missionsseminars an der Universität und Verfasser zahlreicher missionarischer und missionswissenschaftlicher Artikel, Broschüren und Bücher. Der protestantische Kampfgeist und die antikatholische Grundhaltung prägten seine Schriften. Im vorliegenden Werk zeichnet Warneck "zur Lehre und Warnung" den Lebensweg des Pontius Pilatus nach, dem Statthalter des römischen Kaisers Tiberius in der Provinz Judäa, weltweit bekannt als der Mann, der mit seinem Gefälligkeitsurteil den göttlichen Heilsplan vorantrieb. Für Warneck ist die heilige Schrift "eine Gemäldegalerie, ein Photographiealbum", seine Charakterzeichnungen erwachsen aus der Schriftauslegung und sind "nicht eine unzusammenhängende Nebeneinanderstellung auslegender Bemerkungen und erbaulicher Betrachtungen, [...] sondern eine in sich zusammenhängende Entwicklung nach den Gesetzen der Psychologie, der Lebenslogik, die, wie die Worte der Schrift, so auch unsere Gedanken, Reden und Handlungen regelt."
