V prózách tohoto svazku umělecky vrcholí střední údobí autorovy tvorby. Útlým románem Demian (1919), příběhem mládí Emila Sinclaira, postihl Hesse „nerv doby“ (Thomas Mann) a vypověděl mnoho o tehdejší mladé generaci, která zděšena ztrátou starých morálních hodnot, jež jí zničila první světová válka, hledala hodnoty nové. Román měl neobyčejný úspěch, a právě v jeho vyznění lze hledat důvod, proč se i další generace hlásí k Hesseho odkazu. Nevoli k měšťáckému světu vyjadřuje povídka Klein a Wagner, v níž se autor nejvíce přiblížil expresionismu. Mistrovsky napsané Klingsorovo poslední léto (1920) zkoumá umělectví jako možnost a způsob existence. Slavná próza o Siddhárthovi (1922) ztělesňuje touhu po duchovním životě a reflektuje autorovo studium východních učení, v nichž se pokoušel hledat východisko.
