Gretel, vychovávaná s matkou a prarodiči, byla silně ovlivněna svým levicově orientovaným dědečkem. Její přátelství s židovkou Lydií ji přivedlo k poznání perzekuce Židů. V roce 1941 se provdala za Lutze Öhlgarta, obchodníka zapojeného do protifašistického odboje, aby se vyhnula práci v muniční továrně.
