Fifteen-year-old Hagan, the second son of the Burgundian king, grows up in Worms as a lonely, solitary boy, equipped with dark knowledge from his mother Grimhild and the Burgundian seer. He is deeply loyal to his older brother Gundahari, the heir to the throne, as well as to his people and family. As a pledge of loyalty, Hagan is sent to the court of Attila, where he befriends Waldhari of Aquitaine and Hildegund, a daughter of a Suevic prince, becoming their protector in their great love. He risks his life to defend their relationship against Attila's machinations and the political ambitions of his brother Gundahari. Hagan's time is one of upheaval, as the Migration Period stirs Europe, and three religions—the Germanic paganism, Hunnic shamanism, and the rising Christianity—compete for followers.
