On New Year's Eve 1969, Monica Searle was diagnosed with a rare and virulent form of breast cancer. Each time she underwent treatment, Ronald produced a Mrs Mole drawing 'to cheer every dreaded chemotherapy session and evoke the blissful future ahead'. Filled with light and illuminated in glowing colours, the drawings speak of love, optimism and hope. Like the mediaeval illuminated manuscripts such as the 15th-century Les Tres Riches Heures du Duc de Berry, to which the title of this book refers, the 47 drawings are on an intimate scale and were never intended for publication. The story of Monica's survival against the odds and the part played by the encouragement of her husband will move many people who have either experienced cancer for themselves or been affected through a close family member or friend.

Ronald Searle führt eine der spitzesten Federn der Gegenwart. Er ist aber auch einer der originellsten zeitgenössischen Zeichner: sein Einfluß auf die kritische Graphik war und ist bemerkenswert. Seine persönliche, unverwechselbare Handschrift ließ ihn schnell bekannt werden. Er war noch keine zwanzig, als man ihm nachsagte, er habe «in der Welt des gezeichneten Humors eine Revolution hervorgerufen». Inzwischen, 43 Jahre nach der Veröffentlichung seiner ersten Zeichnung (damals war er fünfzehn), hat er sich neue Ausdrucksmöglichkeiten hinzuerobert: den Zeichentrickfilm, die Druckgraphik, das Tafelbild und das dreidimensionale Gestalten in Ton. ln einem allerdings ist er sich gleichgeblieben: als Humorist. Und nie hat er sein Hauptziel aus dem Auge verloren: zu karikieren. Searles künstlerische Entwicklung beruht vor allem auf zwei Voraussetzungen: einer traditionellen akademischen Ausbildung als Zeichner in Cambridge und seinen bitteren Erfahrungen in japanischer Kriegsgefangenschaft. Sie ließen aus Ronald Searle einen Künstler werden, der nicht nur seiner Mittel sicher ist und einen hochentwickelten Sinn für den sogenannten «schwarzen Humor» besitzt, sondern auch aus eigener Erfahrung den Dschungel des Lebens kennt und sich aus ihm mit einem Lachen befreit.
