James R. Newman was een Amerikaanse wiskundige en wiskunde historicus. Hij was tevens advocaat in New York van 1929 tot 1941. Tijdens en na de Tweede Wereldoorlog bekleedde hij belangrijke overheidsfuncties, waaronder Chief Intelligence Officer bij de Amerikaanse ambassade in Londen en Special Assistant to the Undersecretary of War. Hij droeg met name bij aan de redactie van de Atomic Energy Act van 1946. Newman werd lid van de redactieraad van Scientific American in 1948. Hij wordt ook gecrediteerd voor het bedenken en de eerste beschrijving van het wiskundige concept "googol" in zijn invloedrijke boek "Mathematics and The Imagination."
