Als Hans Schwarz, zoon van een joodse arts uit Stuttgart in 1932 het gymnasium bezoekt, komt er een nieuwe jongen in de klas, die zijn boezemvriend wordt: Konradin graaf van Hohenfels. Beiden houden van filosofie, literatuur en kunst. Al gauw blijkt dat Konradin er bij zijn ouders niet voor uitkomt dat zijn vriend joods is. Zijn moeder dweept met Hitler en haat Joden. Uiteindelijk vlucht Hans naar Amerika. De beide vrienden denken dat de scheiding slechts van korte duur zal zijn: in een land met zulke hoogstaande kunstenaars en filosofen kan het nationaal-socialisme niet lang bestaan... Toch bezwijkt ook Konradin voor Hitlers ideeen. De vriendschap is uit; pas wanneer Hans 30 jaar later verneemt dat zijn vriend is geexecuteerd vanwege een aanslag op Hitler eindigt voor hem de oorlog. Een voortreffelijke novelle.

Blackbird Days is rounded out with an autobiographical snapshot of the 2015 terrorist attacks in Paris, Fior’s home.
