Seit seinem Erscheinen vor mehr als zwanzig Jahren ist der Kommentar von Abt Georg Holzherr zur Benediktsregel über den deutschsprachigen Raum hinaus maßgebend geworden. Einerseits zeichnet er sich durch die gut lesbare Übersetzung und die wissenschaftliche Genauigkeit der Erklärungen aus, andererseits wendet er sich durch seine Verständlichkeit nicht nur an Fachleute. Vielmehr wird die Lehre des heiligen Benedikt für unsere heutige Zeit zugänglich und fruchtbar gemacht. Daher befasst sich die Auslegung vorwiegend mit der Spiritualität der Regel, die über die Ordensleute hinaus wegleitend für alle Christen sein will.

Uvedení do křesťanského života : (komentář). Podrobný komentář Řehole Benediktovy z pera emeritního opata švýcarského kláštera Einsiedeln. Obsahuje historický úvod o situaci v církvi na přelomu 5. a 6. století. Opat Holzherr komentuje text svatého Benedikta verš za veršem a shromažďuje ve své knize hojné citace ze starokřesťanských autorů (Basileios/Basil, Athanasios/Atanáš, Augustinus, Jan Cassianus/Kassián). Benediktinskou řeholi totiž považuje za skutečné »uvedení do křesťanského života«, za bránu k moudrosti raných křesťanů a církevních otců. Svůj komentář a náměty k rozjímání neurčil jen řeholnicím a řeholníkům, ale všem křesťanům a lidem, kteří se chtějí napít z pramenů starobylé duchovní literatury. O úspěchu jeho přístupu svědčí nejenom opakovaná vydání německého originálu (prestižní nakladatelství Benziger), ale i fakt, že dílo je přeloženo do několika dalších jazyků.
