Salgari, Emilio (1862-1911)Escritor italiano. Emilio Salgari nació en Verona en 1863. Sus viajes por mar se limitaron a breves periodos de navegación durante su juventud en un barco escuela y al tiempo en que prestó servicios a bordo de un mercantil que recorría la costa Adriática y parte del Mediterráneo. En ese periodo empezó a escribir poesía y relatos breves. Comenzó así su afortunada pero tormentosa carrera literaria.En su obra destacan algunos ciclos temáticos como la jungla, los piratas asiáticos, los corsarios del Caribe y las praderas norteamericanas. Sus libros se caracterizan por la simplicidad de los personajes y la viveza de la acción, aspectos que terminarían por renovar el panorama de la literatura juvenil. Por culpa de las penurias económicas y por una serie de desgracias familiares, su vida acabaría trágicamente. Entre su extensa producción literaria destacan "La cimitarra de Buda", "Los piratas de Malasia", "El Corsario Negro" y "Los tigres de Mompracem".Murió en Turín en 1911.

En Los Dos Rivales, la continuación de las aventuras de Sandokan y Yáñez, se introduce al francés De Lussac y Surama, quienes se encuentran en un campamento en la India con un grupo de poderosos elefantes. Su misión es rescatar a Damna, la hija de Tremal-Naik, quien se une a ellos. Los antagonistas son los thugs que han raptado a Damna. La trama se desarrolla con giros vertiginosos, incluyendo el asesinato de un elefante y el rapto de Surama. Los héroes huyen en una pinassa, enfrentan traiciones y asaltos, y se encuentran con Sirdar, un hijo de un brahmín que se une a los malayos tras haber estado con los thugs.
