Nicolas Bouvier en zijn vriend, de tekenaar Thierry Vernet, reisden in 1953-1954 in een oude Fiat Topolino van Geneve, via Joegoslavie, Turkije, Perzie, Pakistan, Afghanistan, en via de Kyberpas naar India. Het verslag daarvan groeide uit tot een van de beste cultboeken van de reisliteratuur, net zo invloedrijk als On the road van Jack Kerouack en In Patagonia van Bruce Chatwin. Oorspronkelijk verschenen in 1963 als L'Usage du monde, kreeg het boek al gauw de status van een cultboek. Omdat het verschillende landen beschrijft die pas vele jaren later toegankelijk voor toeristen werden en de laatste decennia in het wereldnieuws kwamen door conflicten en oorlogen, lijkt het moment meer dan rijp dat er ook een Nederlandse vertaling van verschijnt. Het thema van De wegen van de wereld is net zo goed het schrijven als het reizen, of veeleer de versmelting van die beiden, een alchemistische synthese, die de werkelijke magie van Bouviers boeken uitmaakt. De Zwitserse schrijver, journalist en fotograaf Nicolas Bouvier (1929-1998) groeide op in Geneve en maakte talrijke reizen door Europa en Azie waarover hij verschillende boeken publiceerde.
