En dan acteerde hij niet.' Zo begint John Irvings elfde roman, 'Tot ik jou vind' het verhaal van de acteur Jack Burns. Zijn moeder Alice is tatoeëerster in Toronto. Als Jack vier is, reist Alice verscheidene havensteden aan de Noordzee met hem af. De twee zijn op zoek naar Jacks verdwenen vader William, een kerkorganist die verslaafd is aan het laten zetten van tatoeages. Maar Alice is een mysterie en William blijft onvindbaar. Zelfs Jacks herinneringen zijn onzeker. Jack Burns gaat naar school in Canada en New England, maar echt vormend is zijn omgang met enkele oudere vrouwen. Irving schildert Jacks leven als acteur in Hollywood met dezelfde rijkdom aan detail en verscheidenheid aan emoties die hij aanwendt bij de beschrijving van de tatoeagestudio's in de genoemde havensteden en de weergalmende orgelmuziek die Jack als kind in Europese kerken heeft gehoord. De toon van het boek, de stem die eruit opklinkt, is weemoedig. Tot ik jou vind is doortrokken van verdriet en bedrog; het is daarnaast een krachtige, komische roman die zich zonder meer laat vergelijken met Irvings meest ambitieuze en ontroerendste werk.

John Irving nous présente un roman à la fois drôle et ambitieux, mettant en scène un héros sympathique, le Dr Daruwalla, qui, étranger en Inde et au Canada, nous fait découvrir Bombay dans toute sa complexité. Ses aventures nous plongent dans la ville, des cabarets aux palaces, des villas de Malabar Hill aux quartiers de Kamathipura, en passant par les studios de cinéma. La Grande Parade s'anime avec des jésuites, des médecins renommés, des travestis, des hijras, des transexuelles, des mendiants mutilés, des clowns nains, et même des chimpanzés racistes. Dans ce cirque coloré, le diabolique "assassin aux dumbos" pourrait bien se cacher parmi eux.
