Author Biography: Doris Lessing was born to British parents in Persia in 1919 and moved with her family to Southern Rhodesia when she was five years old. She went to England in 1949 and has lived there ever since. She is the author of more than thirty books - novels, short stories, reportage, poems, and plays - and is considered among the most important writers of the postwar era. Her most recent works include two volumes of autobiography, Under My Skin and Walking in the Shade, and a novel, Mara and Dann .

Jenny Fields, a cipőkirály leánya ápolónőként dolgozik egy bostoni kórházban. Férjhez menni nem akar, gyereket viszont igen, ezért egy haldokló háborús sebesülttel ejteti magát teherbe. De első művével Garp is pályadíjat nyer - szerelme kezét, aki csakis híres, de legalábbis a hírnév irányába mutató íróhoz hajlandó feleségül menni. Boldog házaséletüket egy ideig nem árnyékolják be házasságon kívüli kapcsolataik — a nem várt borzalmak épp ezért annál elemibb erővel érik az érdekelteket s az olvasót. John Irving groteszk, posztmodern rémmeséje jelentős mű, az elmúlt évtized amerikai irodalmában kevés a hozzá fogható maradandó érdekességű újdonság.
