I romanzi di questa "Trilogia" nascono dalla tragedia di chi fu allontanato dal proprio paese in nome di una motivazione aberrante come quella razziale. In "L'amico ritrovato" questa lacerazione coincide con la fine dell'amicizia tra due compagni di liceo, Hans Schwarz, ebreo figlio di borghesi, e il nobile Konradin von Hohenfels. Il nazismo travolge questo legame come un contagio che sembra colpire anche l'amico di un tempo e portarlo al tradimento. La smentita verrà solo trent'anni anni dopo, imprevista e commovente, nell'ultima lettera scritta da Konradin in "Un'anima non vile". Così l'amicizia è al centro dell'esperienza di Simon Elsas che, tornato dall'esilio, lenirà le ferite dell'anima confrontandosi con i suoi amici di un tempo.

Connie Chatterley è moglie di sir Clifford, un aristocratico che in seguitoa una ferita di guerra è diventato impotente (metafora della sterilità intellettualistica della sua cultura e della sua classe). Connie desidera la maternità e la sua carica vitale la spinge verso il guardiacaccia Mellors. Nascetra i due una passione e quando Connie si accorge di aspettare un bambino,lascia il marito e va a vivere insieme a Mellors.

Scritto quasi interamente nel 1948 ma completato solo vent'anni più tardi, Pic fu pubblicato postumo, nel 1971. È la storia tenera e piena di un dolce humour di Pictorial Review Jackson, detto Pic, un bimbo nero che vive col nonno in North Carolina. Rimasto solo, il ragazzino viene dapprima affidato a una zia, poi se ne fa carico Slim, il fratello maggiore. Il piccolo Pic, una sorta di Huckleberry Finn del Novecento, intraprende insieme a Slim un viaggio attraverso gli Stati Uniti rocambolesco e ricco di incontri e di avventure: i due arriveranno fino a New York per poi dirigersi verso la California. Il viaggio, tema per eccellenza del romanzo americano, della Beat Generation e di Kerouac in particolare, è declinato qui in tono picaresco, attraverso lo sguardo innocente e sincero del giovane Pic e il suo caratteristico linguaggio, pieno di freschezza ed entusiasmo, così come di vivaci invenzioni.
