In 1970 gaat één van Mississippi's meest kleurrijke kranten, The Ford County Times, failliet. Tot ieders verbazing blijkt dat een 23-jarige ex-student, Willie Traynor, de eigenaar van de krant is. De toekomst van de krant ziet er somber uit, totdat er een jonge moeder op brute wijze wordt verkracht en vermoord door een lid van de aanzienlijke Padgitt-familie.
