    Eva Ibbotson was een Britse auteur, gevierd om haar fantasierijke en humoristische romans voor zowel kinderen als volwassenen. Haar werken bevatten vaak magische wezens en plaatsen, hoewel ze zelf niet van het bovennatuurlijke hield en deze personages creëerde om de angst van lezers voor dergelijke zaken te verminderen. Ibbotson bekritiseert vaak "financiële hebzucht en machtswellust", waarbij ze deze kenmerken in haar antagonisten verwerkt. Haar diepe liefde voor de natuur en het Oostenrijkse platteland, dat vaak als decor voor haar verhalen dient, is duidelijk zichtbaar in haar literaire bijdragen.

Origineel, humoristisch spookverhaal, dat informatie geeft over hoe spoken ontstaan, wat voor spoken je hebt, waar ze zoal van houden en wat ze de hele dag doen. Het verhaal is op geen enkel moment eng en van te voren kun je ongeveer aanvoelen wat er zal gebeuren zonder dat het flauw of afgezaagd wordt. Vlot en helder geschreven; duidelijke bladspiegel met een twintigtal zwartwitillustraties (linoleumsnedes). Jammer is de stamboom voorin het boek, die het boek ingewikkelder doet lijken dan het is en geen extra waarde heeft voor het verhaal. Origineel fantasieverhaal, dat zeker de moeite van het lezen waard is en dat veel kinderen tussen de 8 en 12 zal boeien.
