Het Malazijnse rijk stuurt haar elite-troepen naar Darujhistan om deze laatste Vrije Stad te veroveren. Het boek vertelt het verhaal van sergeant Whiskeyjack en kadermagiër Rafelrag. Opvallend is dat de hoofdrolspelers het kwade in de persoon van keizerin Laseen dienen. Doordat deze personages toch eervol en oprecht willen handelen, vervagen de grenzen tussen goed en kwaad. De wereld die geschetst wordt, is grimmig en gewelddadig, maar ook boeiend en kleurrijk. De hoofdpersonen worden goed ontwikkeld. Het plot is complex en kent vele hoofd- en bijfiguren. De lijst van dramatis personae voorin het boek is een goede steun, evenals de landkaart en de stadsplattegrond van Daruhjistan. Het plot komt tot een bevredigend einde. Dat neemt niet weg dat er nog negen vervolgdelen zijn gepland. Dit boek zal niet alleen de fantasy-liefhebbers aanspreken, maar ook de lezers van oorlogsromans.
