The irony lies in the fact that the stalker's threats not only threaten their lives but also expose their inner flaws and fears. French's keen psychological insight into the women's vulnerabilities creates a compelling portrait, making the eventual murders feel almost secondary to the emotional unraveling of the characters, evoking both sympathy and a sense of voyeuristic guilt.
