De Amerikaan Jeffrey Eugenides (1960) is een traag schrijvende auteur wiens drie romans echter allemaal veelgeprezen zijn. Na 'The virgin suicides' (1993) en 'Middlesex' (2002) schetst hij nu een portret van de leden van een langdurige driehoeksverhouding: Mitchell, hopeloos (en kansloos) verliefd op Madeleine, die getrouwd is met Leonard, die lijdt aan een bipolaire stoornis (hij is manisch-depressief).
