This book provides a comparative and historical analysis of totalitarianism and considers why Spain became totalitarian during its inquisition but not France; and why Germany became totalitarian during the previous century, but not Sweden. The author pushes the concept of totalitarianism back into the pre-modern period and challenges Hannah Arendt’s notion of the banality of evil. Instead, he presents an alternative framework that can explain why some states become totalitarian and why they induce people to commit evil acts.

Steven Saxonberg focuses on three main issues in Czech the development of the Czech party system, the "Klaus phenomenon," and gender issues. Recurring themes throughout the book are the role and limits of formal political institutions, the importance of social psychological elements and the lack of influence which ideology has on party politics and voting during the transitional period.

Málokterá oblast veřejné politiky je opředena tolika mýty jako péče o malé děti. Cílem knihy je odhalit a diskreditovat ty mýty, které na české politické a mediální scéně neustále přežívají a blokují otevřenou společenskou a politickou diskusi i reformu rodinné politiky tak, aby odpovídala potřebám různých typů rodin a jejich členů a členek.

Die Analyse des Totalitarismus wird durch einen historischen Vergleich zwischen verschiedenen Ländern vertieft, wobei die Inquisition in Spanien und die politischen Entwicklungen in Deutschland und Schweden im Fokus stehen. Der Autor hinterfragt Hannah Arendts Konzept der Banalität des Bösen und bietet einen neuen Rahmen, um die Entstehung totalitärer Regime und die Anfälligkeit von Menschen für unmoralische Handlungen besser zu verstehen. Dabei wird das Konzept des Totalitarismus in einen historischen Kontext zurückgeführt, der über die moderne Zeit hinausgeht.
