Abraracourcix, de capo van het dorp van Asterix, raakt woedend wanneer hij ontdekt dat Julius Caesar de Belgen als het dapperste volk van heel Gallië heeft aangeduid. Om de eer van de Galliërs te wreken, vertrekt hij naar het land van de Belgen, vergezeld door zijn trouwe vrienden Asterix en Obelix, om Caesar te dwingen zijn opmerkingen te herzien. The wonderful little village where Asterix and Obelix live has only one drawback: its bard is the worst musician in the entire ancient world. Whenever Cacofonix strikes up a tune, his singing sends the sun behind the clouds and causes the rain to fall. Sometimes, though, that "talent" can come in mighty handy. Cacofonix's golden moment arrives when a fakir flies in on a magic carpet asking for help. It seems that his kingdom is suffering from a terrible drought and only the sacrifice of their princess, Orinjade, can end it.
