Miguel Barnet und eine Gruppe von Ethnologen besuchten den hundertdreijährigen Esteban Montejo, einen hochintelligenten und eigensinnigen Mann voller Erinnerungen an das Leben der Sklaven, die Abschaffung der Sklaverei auf Kuba und den Befreiungskrieg gegen die spanischen Kolonialisten. Montejo, ein Cimarrón, lebte viele Jahre in Einsamkeit in den Bergen, bevor er sich den Aufständischen anschloss, die gegen die amerikanische Invasion kämpften.
