From the time of the Celts and the Vikings, and through the medieval period, the Isle of Man has developed a distinctive culture and traditions all of its own. The photographs take up the story in late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries when the island prospered as a holiday resort and as a retreat from mainland Britain. Every aspect of Manx life is covered schools, shopping, work, entertainment, special occasions, the Second World War and of course the extraordinary TT races for cars and motorcycles.
