Richard trekt door Thailand. Op een avond hoort hij over het geheime strand, een nirwana voor de jonge rugzaktoerist op zoek naar avontuur, seks en de ultieme vakantie. Dit paradijs bevindt zich ergens op een van de vele kleine eilanden die Thailand omringen, onvindbaar voor buitenstaanders. De volgende dag vindt Richard een kaart met routebeschrijving op zijn deur; de man die de kaart daar heeft bevestigd, heeft vervolgens zijn polsen doorgesneden. Zo begint voor Richard een tocht naar dit onbekende Thailand. Hij vindt het paradijs bij een selecte gemeenschap die vreedzaam leeft in het Shangri-la. Witte stranden, kleurrijke koraalriffen en akkers vol met drugs. Maar ook in het paradijs is niet alles perfect en al snel verschijnen de eerste barsten in het plaatje.
