The first political biography of Franjo Tudjman, Croatia's first president, has taken nearly 20 years to publish after the country gained independence under his leadership. The project began in 2004 during a Public Policy Scholar appointment at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, initially intended as a quick survey of Tudjman's writings. However, the extensive material required more time than anticipated, leading to a manuscript submission by the end of 2006. Despite its completion, the Woodrow Wilson Center Press rejected the manuscript after mixed reviews, and subsequent attempts to interest other university presses in the U.S. and U.K. have been unsuccessful, possibly due to perceptions of Croatia's significance compared to Serbia. Sadkovich's previous work examined the American media's framing of the Yugoslav conflict, suggesting that media narratives shape public perception. He posits that Tudjman's negative image in the U.S. media may stem from limited access to influential publications and diplomats more familiar with Serbia. The portrayal of Tudjman as a nationalist contrasts sharply with Tito's enduring positive image, despite his controversial legacy. This disparity reflects broader biases in media and scholarly discourse, highlighting how perceptions of leaders are influenced by the political climate and the sources consulted by journalists and policymakers.
