Quasi tutti i monologhi raccolti in questo volume sono stati scritti a quattro mani da Dario Fo e Franca Rame. Un'idea dell'uno o dell'altra diventava un "trattamento", poi veniva discussa, più o meno vivacemente, e infine sceneggiata. Ma, come ricorda Fo, il maggior lavoro di elaborazione è avvenuto direttamente sul palcoscenico: "sera dopo sera, Franca, valendosi dell'apporto del pubblico, che è sempre il nostro più valido collaboratore, variava ritmi, struttura dei periodi, sveltiva i passaggi, aggiungeva o toglieva battute... Feydeau diceva che scrivere testi per attori femmina è un lavoro immane perché difficilissimo è riuscire a travestirsi da donna calzando oltre la pelle anche il suo cervello. Per me è stato piuttosto facile, il cervello per il travestimento l'ho sempre avuto a domicilio: era quello di Franca".
