Durch eine separatistische Revolution wird Sulaco von den anderen Landesteilen Costaguanas getrennt. Ziel der Revolution war es gleichfalls, einem Putsch durch eine von Populisten geführte Aufstandsbewegung zu entgehen. Die Bevölkerung der Republik ist in Schichten getrennt. Die Unterklasse wird von bäuerlichen Mestizen und Indios gebildet. Aus dieser Klasse werden sowohl die Minenarbeiter als auch die Soldaten für die jeweiligen Armeen durch Zwang rekrutiert. Zur Oberschicht gehören die aus Spanien kommenden, landaristokratischen Blancos. Sie sehen sich als die Alteingesessenen des Landes. Eine dritte Schicht bilden die Zuwanderer, die als Ausländer angesehen werden. Dazu zählen vor allem Briten und Italiener. Von ihnen ist der Ausbau des Hafens, der Eisenbahn und nicht zuletzt der Silbermine abhängig.

Anstoß zu dem Roman gab die dramatische Geschichte des Pilgerschiffs Jeddah, das 1880 in Seenot von seinem Kapitän verlassen wurde. Conrad befasste sich mit dieser Geschichte nach seiner Ankunft in Singapur 1883. Jim ist ein junger britischer Seemann, der als Erster Offizier auf der Patna dient, einem heruntergekommenen Schiff, beladen mit Pilgern, die vom indischen Subkontinent nach Mekka zur Pilgerreise Haddsch gebracht werden sollen. Bei einer Havarie verläßt die Besatzung aus Halunken das Schiff und überläßt die Pilger ihrem Schicksal. Sie befürchten, die Patna würde sinken. Jim will eigentlich an Bord bleiben, springt aber dann doch der restlichen Besatzung hinterher. Die Patna sinkt jedoch nicht, ein französisches Schiff nimmt sie ins Schlepptau und bringt sie in Sicherheit. Während sich der Kapitän und die anderen Besatzungsmitglieder einem Prozeß entziehen, stellt sich allein Jim der Verantwortung. Das Gericht entzieht ihm seine nautischen Patente aufgrund seiner Verfehlung. Im Gericht trifft er Marlow, der sich mit ihm anfreundet und versucht, ihm Arbeit als Gehilfe verschiedener Bekannter, z. B. eines Müllers oder eines Schiffsausrüsters, zu verschaffen. Jim versucht unerkannt zu bleiben, aber immer wenn seine Vergangenheit ans Licht kommt, gibt er seine Stelle auf und bewegt sich immer tiefer in den Fernen Osten. Seine Schande verfolgt ihn wie ein Schatten.

Als die Heldin Kapitän Roderick Anthony kennenlernt, keimt im Leser die Hoffnung auf, daß die beiden trotz aller Bedenken ihrer Umgebung miteinander glücklich werden können. Aus all den Ereignissen des ersten Teils entwickelt sich jedoch erst im zweiten Teil der innere Konflikt des Romans und das »Thema vom schrankenlosen Walten des Zufalls im Leben der Menschen«.

The ships at the Jetty were fine enough; they lay one behind the other; and the __Sapphire__, third from the end, was as good as the rest of them, and nothing more. Each ship at the Jetty had, of course, her chief officer on board. So had every other ship in dock. The policeman at the gates knew them all by sight, without being able to say at once, without thinking, to what ship any particular man belonged. As a matter of fact, the mates of the ships then lying in the London Dock were like the majority of officers in the Merchant Service-a steady, hard-working, staunch, un-romantic-looking set of men, belonging to various classes of society, but with the professional stamp obliterating the personal characteristics, which were not very marked anyhow.

At one point in the story, the native Makola, serving as Kayerts's and Carlier's bookkeeper, initiates an exchange of slaves for ivory. Initially Kayerts and Carlier are stunned and scandalized by the idea, yet eventually they accept the deal and aid Makola for his huge profit. Both men are continuously plagued by diseases and grow very weak physically towards the end of the story. Finally, a seemingly trivial matter - sugar - sparks an irrational, uncontrolled and violent conflict between them, and ends tragically as Kayerts accidentally shoots and kills Carlier. At the end of the story, just when the company steamboat approaches the station two months later than it should have, Kayerts hangs himself out of desperation.
