Kniha Obřady chaosu, ke které má nyní ve zkrácené formě přístup český čtenář, je výběrem textů o konzumní společnosti a showbyznysu v Mexiku. Monsiváis je neoblomně věrný kulturní jinakosti neoficiálního Mexika a vytrvale zaznamenává jeho nejneobyčejnější projevy. Příznačný je tentokrát absolutní rozpad státu jako tvůrce kulturního odkazu, ať je přijatelný, či nikoliv. K výbuchu nyní dochází vlastním impulzem a má svou vlastní logiku. Impulz je neproniknutelný, logika nepochopitelná a oba dohromady přetvářejí kulturní nacionalismus, který se jeví jako vybledlý odkaz. „Mexická podstata“ je sice stále přítomná, ale nyní zjišťujeme, že byla asimilována a konfrontována, vychválena a ignorována, či ponechána stranou.
