Do you know how to say “shovel” in Albanian? “Lopata”! Even if you don’t, be sure to pack one for your trip. Albania has transformed since my first visit in 1999, with renovated towns, new roads, and improved infrastructure. Mobile phone signals are now widespread, and stores are well-stocked. However, the mountains remain largely unchanged, and many villages are depopulating as young people migrate to towns. The mountain roads suffer from neglect, with illegal logging exacerbating the deterioration. Deep ruts and landslides make many routes impassable, especially after winter. Yet, numerous beautiful paths still lead to breathtaking mountain lakes and stunning rock formations. This guide aims to showcase the most enchanting places in Albania that I cherish and revisit often. Disregard the negative tales that circulate in Central Europe about the region. While it’s wise to exercise caution and camp near residential areas, you’ll find that Albanians are incredibly hospitable. Engaging with locals and offering small gifts, such as beer or chocolates, can foster goodwill. My respectful approach has always been met with kindness. E-book only, without printing.
