Tři mladí muzikanti z Liverpoolu se roku 1960 vydají do Hamburku, aby si tu vysloužili ostruhy hraním v klubu, který teprve nedávno změnil podobu a místo striptérek zaměstnal britský bigbeat. Hádají se o postel, sní o hamburských holkách a o úspěchu. Neúspěch ale pronásleduje kapelu až do okamžiku, kdy frontman Paul, inspirován tím, co se dozvěděl o historii i přítomnosti města, vystihne správný moment provokace a oblékne si esesácké holínky.
