When Valerie and Euan's car breaks down in remote countryside near the Antonine Wall they have a problem. Divadelní hra. Tři mladí muzikanti z Liverpoolu se roku 1960 vydají do Hamburku, aby si tu vysloužili ostruhy hraním v klubu, který teprve nedávno změnil podobu a místo striptérek zaměstnal britský bigbeat. Hádají se o postel, sní o hamburských holkách a o úspěchu. Neúspěch ale pronásleduje kapelu až do okamžiku, kdy frontman Paul, inspirován tím, co se dozvěděl o historii i přítomnosti města, vystihne správný moment provokace a oblékne si esesácké holínky. Cena za takový úspěch je ale vysoká, a promítne se nejostřeji právě do vztahů mezi trojicí protagonistů.
Historická freska ze skotského venkova. V lyrickém oparu zde probíhá drama prostinké ženy sedláka a milovníka koní. Ta naváže podivuhodné přátelství s mlynářem, jenž je u vesničanů v opovržení a nenávisti (což je v tomto prostředí tradice, nic osobního). Tento relativně vzdělaný a emancipovaný člověk v ní rozdmýchá spontánní touhu poznávat svět, pronikat k podstatám okolních jevů, které zbytek vesnice bere za samozřejmé. Filosofické vzplanutí ji ale staví do podobné opozice vůči běžným lidem, v jaké je mlynář, což v ní budí potřebu přestrukturovat svůj život, a to i za cenu vraždy.
