In un tempo, come l'attuale, di dolorosi e talvolta dilaniati assilli giudiziari e processuali, forse nessun testo può risultare all'ordine del giorno meglio di queste scarne e terribili pagine della Storia della colonna infame di Alessandro Manzoni. E' vero che si trattava in quel caso di sventurati innocenti. Argomento, la ricostruzione giuridico-normativa del processo svoltosi nel 1630, durante la peste che fa da tragico fondale dei Promessi sposi, contro due incolpati di "unzione". Destinata dapprima a formare un capitolo del romanzo, ne fu poi avulsa e fu pubblicata come appendice all'edizione del capolavoro del 1840.
