Šlomo Avineri Boeken

Born in Budapest in 1860, Theodor Herzl was a daydreamer who aspired to follow the footsteps of De Lesseps, builder of the Suez Canal. As the Paris correspondent for Neue Freie Presse, Herzl followed the Dreyfus Affair, a notorious anti-Semitic incident in France in which a French Jewish army captain was falsely convicted of spying for Germany. Herzl came to reject his early ideas regarding Jewish emancipation and assimilation, and to believe that the Jews must remove themselves from Europe and create their own state. In 1896, he published 'The Jewish State' to immediate acclaim. This is his story.

Profesor politologie na Hebrejské univerzitě v Jeruzalémě Shlomo (Šlomo) Avineri (1933) je autorem monografie věnované zakladateli politického sionismu Theodoru Herzlovi. Kniha není určena jen těm, kdo se zajímají o dějiny Státu Izrael, ale všem, které zajímá historie Evropy na sklonku 19. a na počátku 20. století. Shlomo Avineri konfrontuje události tohoto období, tak jak je ve svých denících zaznamenal Theodor Herzl, tedy jeho očima, s veškerými planými nadějemi, omyly, ale i prozíravostí a smyslem pro diplomatické jednání, s vlastní analýzou tehdejšího společenského vývoje. K němu patřilo selhání demokratických institucí ve Francii a krize rakousko-uherského mocnářství a s ní související vzrůst populismu, nacionalismu a antisemitismu. Právě Herzl patřil k těm nemnohým, kteří správně vytušili, jak velké nebezpečí se v tomto směřování skrývá a jak naléhavě Židé potřebují své útočiště – vlastní stát. Avineriho styl je ke čtenáři velmi vstřícný, píše poučeně a přitom poutavě, dokáže zdůraznit dějinné paradoxy, kombinovat osobní pohled s perspektivou historického a společenského kontextu i s naší současností.
