De två första delarna av Tjänstekvinnans son skrevs på våren och försommaren 1886 och skildrar tiden från den första barndomen fram till år 1872, när han slutgiltigt övergav universitetsstudierna i Uppsala för att återvända till Stockholm "och bli litteratör, samt möjligen författare, om hans kallelse befanns vara grundad". De två avslutande delarna skrev Strindberg i Schweiz 1886. I del 3 skildrar Strindberg sina växlingsrika ungdomsår 1872-75 och i sista delen dokumenteras den idéutveckling som avtecknar sig i den överväldigande rika produktionen från genombrottet med Röda rummet 1879 till bokslutet med Tjänstekvinnans son .

Previous translations into English have been made from the published French version or the Swedish translation of it; this is the first translation of Strindberg's original text.
