Dej románu sa odohráva počas piatich dní prvého týždňa v septembri 1899 na Dolnej zemi Uhorska. Rozpráva príbeh starnúcich rodičov, ich dcéry, starej dievky prezývanej Škovránča a dožívajúcej miestnej inteligencie, ktorá sa snaží prekonať nudu života alkoholickým opojením a zábavnými „pohuľankami kancov“. Autor do diela zakomponoval svoje spomienky na rodičovský dom a rodisko – súdobú Szabadku (Subotice). Jeho znalosť psychológie a psychoanalýzy mu umožňuje viesť čitateľa k poznaniu, že vnútorný dej vo vedomí postáv je často dôležitejší než vonkajšie udalosti. Dezső Kosztolányi, významná postava modernej maďarskej literatúry prvej tretiny 20. storočia, sa narodil 29. marca 1885 v Szabadke a zomrel 3. novembra 1936 v Budapešti. Jeho slovenský pôvod a rodové meno naznačujú presídlenie predkov z Hornej zeme do Dolnej zeme. Vzdelanie získal v rodičovskom dome a na gymnáziu v rodnej Subotici, kde jeho otec bol riaditeľom. Napriek tomu, že štúdiá na filozofických fakultách budapeštianskej a viedenskej univerzity nedokončil, získal výnimočné umelecké a filozofické zručnosti, ktoré uplatnil v rozmanitej literárnej tvorbe. V roku 1933 objavil na sebe príznaky zhubnej rakoviny, ktorej napokon podľahol v septembri 1936.

It is 1900, give or take a few years. The Vajkays—call them Mother and Father—live in Sárszeg, a dead-end burg in the provincial heart of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Father retired some years ago to devote his days to genealogical research and quaint questions of heraldry. Mother keeps house. Both are utterly enthralled with their daughter, Skylark. Unintelligent, unimaginative, unattractive, and unmarried, Skylark cooks and sews for her parents and anchors the unremitting tedium of their lives. Kosztolányi’s crystalline prose, perfect comic timing, and profound human sympathy conjure up a tantalizing beauty that lies on the far side of the irredeemably ordinary. Die Handlung führt an das Gymnasium einer ungarischen Kleinstadt. Hier quälen sich die Jungen nicht gegenseitig, wie in Robert Musils zwei Jahrzehnte zuvor entstandenem "Zögling Törleß", sondern ein älterer Lehrer steht im Mittelpunkt, der als Folge überholter Lebensformen und -auffassungen von den Schülern drangsaliert und gedemütigt wird, bis hin zum dramatischen Klimax des Buches.§Kosztolanyi erzählt, ebenso feinfühlig in der Sprache wie intensiv in der Geataltung, die Geschichte des Professors Antal Novak und seiner Tochter Hilda, die mit ihrem Geliebten dem elterlichen Haus entflieht. Dabei gelingt dem Autor ein eindrucksvolles Psychogramm menschlichen Verhaltens in einer untergehenden Welt.
