In March 1845, Henry David Thoreau moved into a small cabin in the woods surrounding Walden Pond. Here he conducted a two-year social experiment, removing himself almost entirely from society while instead engaging with the sounds, the animals and the passers-by that inhabited the wilderness. Het onderwerp van deze uitgebreide roman is geïnspireerd op de persoonlijke ervaringen van de auteur. In 1842, op zesentwintigjarige leeftijd, reisde ze met haar jongere zus naar Brussel, waar ze werk vonden in het pension van de echtgenoten Héger. Charlotte gaf Engelse les en Emily muziekles. Na enkele maanden moesten ze terug naar huis, maar Charlotte keerde al snel terug naar België, waar haar verdrietige jaren begonnen. Zonder Emily voelde ze zich eenzaam, had ze heimwee naar huis en als protestant kon ze zich nooit aanpassen aan de katholieke omgeving. Haar terugkeer naar huis werd gedreven door een onbereikbare liefde voor meneer Héger. De roman, vernoemd naar de fictieve stad, is tot op zekere hoogte autobiografisch. De hoofdpersoon, Lucy Snowe, ervaart vergelijkbare problemen en verlangens als de auteur. Net als Charlotte gelooft ze in idealen en pure liefde en is ze bereid haar leven te wijden aan de dienst aan anderen. Het verhaal van Lucy, eerst ongewenst en later bewonderd, is gelaagd en vol verrassende wendingen. De lezer weet nooit waar de auteur de personages naartoe leidt en welke levensperikelen hen te wachten staan.
