Net als Charlotte gelooft ze in idealen en pure liefde en is ze bereid haar leven te wijden aan de dienst aan anderen. Het verhaal van Lucy, eerst ongewenst en later bewonderd, is gelaagd en vol verrassende wendingen. De lezer weet nooit waar de auteur de personages naartoe leidt en welke levensperikelen hen te wachten staan.
