Kniha obsahuje korespondenci od roku 1900 do roku 1924. Nové vydání Kafkovy rodinné korespondence zahrnuje listy sestře Ottle i rodičům, rozsáhlý poznámkový aparát a autorův rodokmen. V těchto dopisech poznáme F. Kafku i takového, jaký se dosud v žádných ze svých textů neprojevoval.

Ottla, 1892 geboren, war die jüngste von Kafkas Schwestern. Sie setzte, unterstützt von ihrem Bruder, aber gegen den Willen der Eltern, eine eigene Berufswahl und die Heirat mit einem tschechischen Christen durch. Während der Nazizeit ließ sie sich scheiden, um die Karriere ihres Mannes nicht zu gefährden, kam nach Theresienstadt und meldete sich dort Anfang Oktober 1943 freiwillig als Begleiterin eines Kindertransportes nach Auschwitz. In den Briefen an Ottla ist ein neuer Kafka zu entdecken, ein zärtlicher, hilfreicher und oft witziger Bruder, ein guter Gefährte. Kafka hat über einen Zeitraum von mehr als 25 Jahren, bis zu seinem Tod, an Ottla geschrieben, jenem Menschen, dem er als einzigem ganz vertraute.
