Op een boerderij diep in de bossen van Wisconsin woont de familie Sawtelle: de jonge Edgar en zijn ouders Gar en Trudy. Gar heeft altijd een speciale liefde voor honden gehad en heeft dit doorgegeven aan zijn zoon. Edgar, die niet kan praten, kan uitstekend communiceren met de Sawtelle-honden, die een nobel en zacht karakter en een hoog ontwikkelde intuïtie hebben. Maar na de komst van Edgars op het eerste gezicht charmante oom Claude is het gedaan met de rust op de boerderij. Dan sterft Gar onverwacht, en Edgar kan niet telefonisch om hulp vragen.
