Hlavní hrdina převážně autobiografického románu Šantaram přilétá do Bombaje, aniž kdo tuší, že jeho příjezdu předcházel útěk z přísně střežené australské věznice, kde si odpykával devatenáctiletý trest za loupežná přepadení. Loupil, aby ukojil svou závislost na heroinu, kterou si vypracoval po rozpadu rodiny.
