Hlavní hrdina převážně autobiografického románu Šantaram přilétá do Bombaje, aniž kdo tuší, že jeho příjezdu předcházel útěk z přísně střežené australské věznice, kde si odpykával devatenáctiletý trest za loupežná přepadení. Loupil, aby ukojil svou závislost na heroinu, kterou si vypracoval po rozpadu rodiny. V Bombaji získává přátele, kteří mu pomohou zorientovat se v tamějším životě, ale další životní zvraty ho opět dostávají do vězení a posléze na cestu mafiána, pašeráka i bojovníka v afghánské válce. Gregory David Roberts, který v románu popsal své vlastní zážitky, dnes žije v Bombaji, kde založil charitativní organizaci zajišťující lékařskou péči pro nejchudší obyvatele. Tady napsal i volné pokračování své úspěšné knihy s názvem The Mountain Shadow, která má vyjít letos na podzim. Kniha, jež právě vychází v češtině, je kvůli čtenářskému komfortu rozdělená do tří samostatných oddílů, ale speciální obal z ní činí jeden celek se společným hřbetem.
