Při současném rozmachu mediálních a kulturálních studií míváme občas ve zvyku pozapomínat na „tradiční“ ohniska oborového zájmu: dominance televize či internetu jako kdyby přehlušovala rozhlas a klasická tištěná média přesouvala do zaprášených regálů „toho, co již pominulo“ a„toho, co právě pomíjí“. Náležité porozumění současnému globalizovanému, digitálnímu a tekutému světu médií je přitom do velké míry podmíněno pochopením jeho základů, historických souvislostí, ze kterých tento vyrůstá.
