Milostný román odehrávající se v rozmezí od 2. světové války do 90. let 20. století v Egyptě, líčí příběh tragické lásky mezi Karimou, dcerou domorodých sloužících a Charlesem, Angličanem, který zde žije se svými rodiči. Karima s Charlesem naleznou společné štěstí jen na malý okamžik. Jejich počínající vztah, kterému není přáno v rodině dívky ani chlapce, skončí tragicky. Charles zahyne během dopravní nehody, Karima zůstává sama, těhotná, odvržená rodinou chlapce, částečně i svou. O dítěti se novopečení prarodiče dozvídají příliš pozdě.
