Wann David McKee Elmar erfunden hat, weiß er nicht mehr genau. Er kann sich jedoch noch gut daran erinnern, dass er zu dieser Zeit unter dem Einfluss von Paul Klee gestanden hat. Elmar ist damit nicht nur der bunteste aller Elefanten, sondern auch der mit dem berühmtesten Paten.
