This Urtext edition of Beethoven's piano sonatas is based on the autograph or manuscript and/or first edition(s) of the works. The editorial additions have been kept to a minimum and are indicated by square brackets. In regard to the manner of performance, the exucution of ornaments, and fingering, no suggestions have been made. Beethoven's original fingering is included unchanged. The inconsistencies of the sources are explained in the notes.

Über elf Jahre lang setzte sich Beethoven mit seiner einzigen Oper auseinander, die auf Jean-Nicolas Bouillys Historienstück 'Léonore ou l'amour conjuga'l fußt. In drei Fassungen ist sie überliefert: 'Leonore' von 1805 und 1806 sowie 'Fidelio' von 1814. Sie dokumentieren, wie Beethoven durch Eingriffe in Dramaturgie, Text, Umfang, Deklamation, Sangbarkeit und musikalisches Sprechen das Singspiel zum zeitlosen Ideendrama weiterentwickelte. In dieser Ausgabe werden erstmalig die Texte von 1806 (von Joseph Ferdinand von Sonnleithner und Stephan Breuning) und 1814 (von Georg Friedrich Treitschke), zusammengestellt aus den Fassungen der gedruckten Libretti, des Handexemplars und der musikalischen Quellen, synoptisch wiedergegeben.
