Přemýšlet o společnosti a kultuře někdy bolí. Společnost i myslitele. Pokud se někdo zajímá o politiku, společnost a kulturu, musel narazit na slovo neomarxismus. V Česku je často vyslovováno s předsudky — skrývá se však za ním jeden z nejživějších myšlenkových proudů dvacátého století. Jeho nejvýraznější představitelé byli němečtí intelektuálové jako Walter Benjamin, Theodor Adorno nebo Herbert Marcuse, kteří si před druhou světovou válkou začali všímat, jak rozporuplné dopady mají masová média a kultura na soudobou společnost. Sledovali společenské patologie a pokoušeli se je v novém výzkumném institutu ve Frankfurtu vytvářením kritické teorie pojmenovávat a snad i napravit. Po válce se však Frankfurtská škola rozprchla po světě a s ní i její myšlenky. Benjamin spáchal sebevraždu na útěku před nacisty, Adorno se marně pokoušel o kariéru v Kalifornii, z Marcuseho se stal idol hippies… Grandhotel nad propastí je kolektivní biografií, průvodcem neomarxistickou filozofií a zároveň tak trochu kronikou dvacátého století. Kritickou kronikou.

Among the key figures were philosophers Walter Benjamin, Theodor Adorno, Max Horkheimer, and Herbert Marcuse, who not only transformed intellectual thought but also redefined the subjects worthy of investigation. Their lives and ideas were deeply intertwined with the tumultuous events of the twentieth century. This narrative weaves together biography, philosophy, and storytelling to illustrate how these thinkers sought to comprehend the politics of culture amid the rise of fascism. Many fled Nazi Germany, finding refuge in the United States. Benjamin, carrying his unfinished Arcades Project, was arrested in Spain and tragically took his own life to avoid deportation. Meanwhile, Adorno's attempts to break into Hollywood fell flat, and he famously criticized jazz, even encountering Charlie Chaplin in Malibu. After the war, interest in the Frankfurt School surged. From California, Marcuse penned One Dimensional Man, which influenced the 1960s counterculture and figures like Angela Davis. In a tragic twist, Adorno died following confrontations with student radicals in Berlin. By seriously examining popular culture—film, music, ideas, and consumerism—the Frankfurt School analyzed the nature and crisis of a mechanized society, offering insights that resonate in today’s age of social media and rampant consumption.
