In de zomer van 1993 stelde het Italiaanse radio- en televisiestation RAI een interview voor niet paus Johannes Paulus II. Het zou het eerste uitgebreide televisie interview worden in de geschiedenis van het pausschap. De Italiaanse auteur en journalist Vittorio Messori viel de eer te beurt de vragen voor te bereiden. Helaas kon door omstandigheden het vraaggesprek geen doorgang vinden. Paus Johannes Paulus II was echter zo geïntrigeerd door de vragen, dat hij' ze graag schriftelijk wilde beantwoorden.
