Walter Scherf was een Duitse schrijver, componist en onderzoeker van kinderliteratuur, jeugdliteratuur en sprookjes. Zijn werk kenmerkt zich door een diepe interesse in volksverhalen en traditionele liederen, die hij onderzocht en populariseerde. Scherf droeg bij aan de internationale uitwisseling op het gebied van kinderliteratuur en -illustraties, waarbij hij zich in het bijzonder inzette voor de inclusie van Oostbloklanden. Zijn vertalingen, met name van sprookjes en fantasy literatuur, verrijkten het Duitse literaire landschap, en zijn eigen composities, waaronder jeugdliederen, werden klassiekers.
