Whether you are just starting out or are reinventing yourself, Larry Smith will show you how to turn what you love into what you do For the past three decades, Professor Larry Smith has become something of a “career whisperer” for his students at the University of Waterloo. His guidance has helped steer more than twenty-five thousand students to careers they love at companies like Facebook, Amazon, Tesla and Google, to name just a few. But most of us are left to figure out one of the biggest decisions of our lives on our own. Each year, millions of talented college and university students graduate with little or no real sense of what their next step will be. And shifting economies and life circumstances often send us down the wrong career path, or down one that isn’t a perfect fit for our skills and personalities—even if we are often unaware of it. But it is possible—even if you already have a foothold in a career—to make changes that will result in renewed passion and success that is greater than anything you’ve ever imagined. With his straightforward, no-nonsense approach, Smith itemizes and dismisses all the usual excuses, fears and worries that people hide behind when trying to find their true direction. He shows how it is possible to change course and get on the right path. It won’t necessarily be easy, but if you follow Smith’s guidance, your career dreams can come true.

This popular and successful text was originally written for a one-semester course in linear algebra at the sophomore undergraduate level. Consequently, the book deals almost exclusively with real finite dimensional vector spaces, but in a setting and formulation that permits easy generalisation to abstract vector spaces. A wide selection of examples of vector spaces and linear transformation is presented to serve as a testing ground for the theory. In the second edition, a new chapter on Jordan normal form was added which reappears here in expanded form as the second goal of this new edition, after the principal axis theorem. To achieve these goals in one semester it is necessary to follow a straight path, but this is compensated by a wide selection of examples and exercises. In addition, the author includes an introduction to invariant theory to show that linear algebra alone is incapable of solving these canonical forms problems. A compact, but mathematically clean introduction to linear algebra with particular emphasis on topics in abstract algebra, the theory of differential equations, and group representation theory.

Mingo Junction, a working-class town in the upper Ohio River Valley, has a rich mix of ethnicities and races with a history going back to the Mingo Indians, including visits from George Washington in the 1770s. Early settlement came as the coal mining industry flourished, followed by iron and steel foundries and accompanying railroads and river barge traffic. Mingo's chief industry is its steel mill, first Carnegie Steel Mill, then Wheeling-Pitt Steel Mill for over 100 years. The town's deep character is etched in its work, social, cultural, and natural landscapes. This is seen in its schools, churches, businesses and industry, daily life, active social organizations, and its famous figures: Jake Strott and George Kakasic of the 1930s Pittsburgh Steelers (Pirates); Joe Fortunato of the Chicago Bears; coach Woody Hayes; Spud Hughes, inventor of menthol cigarettes; and Bill (Lil Squirt) Albaugh, spokesperson for Squirt soda. Renowned singing groups include The Antones, The Stereos, Buddy Sharp and the Shakers, The Mingo Men, and Bob Parissi of Wild Cherry. Among major movies filmed in the town are Reckless, Hearts of Steel, and 1978 Academy Award winner The Deer Hunter.
