Raymond Carr

Engaging the theologies of Karl Barth and James H. Cone, this study explores their contrasting approaches to faith—Barth's "from above" perspective against Cone's "from below" stance. Utilizing Thelonious Monk's jazz aesthetic, particularly his tune "Round Midnight," the author reinterprets their theological contributions. This volume emphasizes the interplay between Christ and the social contexts of both theologians, advocating for innovative christological reflections that resonate with Monk's invitation to creatively reinterpret established melodies.

Engaging the theological insights of Karl Barth and James H. Cone, this study explores their distinct approaches to faith—Barth's "from above" perspective and Cone's "from below" stance against racism. The author employs Thelonious Monk's jazz aesthetics, specifically the Bebop tune "Epistrophy," to reconceptualize their contributions. This first volume delves into the historical and hermeneutical contexts of both theologians, using Monk's musical thinking to reshape and elevate their revolutionary ideas in contemporary theology.

Focusing on the interplay between theology and music, this final volume of a three-part study explores the works of Karl Barth and James H. Cone, two pivotal twentieth-century theologians. Utilizing Thelonious Monk's "Misterioso" as a conceptual lens, Carr delves into the theme of divine freedom as essential for black liberation. He invites theologians to embrace the mystery of God's freedom, suggesting it as a foundation for authentic living amid societal challenges. This innovative approach bridges aesthetic thinking with profound theological discourse.

The word liberal as part of our political vocabulary, comes from Spain. It was first used to describe a group of radical patriots cooped up in Cadiz, refugees from the French invasion of 1808. In 1812 they drew up a constitution enshrining the sovereignty of the people wich struck at the very basis of the old monarchy and became the model for advanced democrats from St Petersburg to Naples. Universal male suffrage was established in Spain in 1890 - earlier than in Britain. The imposition of advanced liberal institutions on a conservative society, both economically and socially backward, inevitably caused tensions; and these, Raymond Carr argues, explain much of Spainsh history. His analysis, incorporating much new research, starts at the September Revolutionof1868 and goes rught up to the present day.
